A day with Fairy Tale Play Communities
Why is The Ugly Duckling sad and how can we help it? The Kindergarten ‘Børnehuset Munke Mose’ in Odense, had a visit from play enthusiast Gitte B. Bork for a whole day, where she - together with children and pedagogues, facilitated a play day, which made everyone indulge in play in Andersen's fairy tale world.
All the way up on the top floor of the kindergarten, Gitte B. Bork has been given permission to furnish a room solemnly for Fairy Tale Play Communities. Groups of children arrive in shifts; first the nursery children arrive, then follow the older kindergarten children.
"We start with a good-day song, because as we all know it is important to have a good start for the day, it is equally important to have a good start for the play", says Gitte Bork. Next song to follow is the H.C. Andersen song, which all children know. They put on their ‘thinking hats’ and take turns telling the group what is on their mind. Gitte opens her magical suitcase, and inside it she and the children find a letter from The Ugly Duckling. The duckling needs help, is longing for friends, and asks the children for help, and then the game begins…….
